What Is Polished Concrete?

Polished concrete is a multi-step mechanical process where the concrete slab is ground through progressively finer diamond tooling — from coarse grinding to ultra-fine polishing — until the surface reaches the desired level of sheen and aggregate exposure.

A chemical densifier is applied during the process to harden the concrete and increase its density. The result is a floor that is part of the concrete itself, not a coating applied on top. It won't peel, chip, or delaminate. It gets harder over time.

Available finishes range from matte (400 grit) to satin (800 grit) to glass (1500–3000 grit). Aggregate exposure is determined during the grinding phase and can range from a cream finish to full aggregate reveal.

THE PROCESS

How a Polished Concrete Floor Gets Built

STEP 01

Initial Assessment

On-site walkthrough to evaluate slab condition, aggregate, existing coatings, and any repair or correction work required before polishing begins.

STEP 02

Slab Preparation

Grinding to remove existing coatings, adhesives, or surface contamination. Crack repair and slab correction to bring the surface within tolerance.

STEP 03

Progressive Diamond Grinding

Sequential passes with progressively finer diamond tooling — from coarse grinding to medium refinement — to open the slab and expose aggregate at the desired level.

STEP 04

Densifier Application

Chemical densifier applied at the appropriate grit stage to penetrate and harden the concrete, increasing surface density and scratch resistance.

STEP 05

Polishing to Specified Finish

Final polishing passes to achieve the specified sheen level — matte (400 grit), satin (800 grit), or glass (1500–3000 grit).

STEP 06

Sealer and Guard Application

Penetrating sealer and stain guard applied to protect the surface and simplify maintenance. Final inspection and walkthrough with the client.
